OER/Open Pedagogy Course

I was up at 4:45 this morning to attend a 5 am meeting for a class I am starting with a whole bunch of educators from Ireland 🙂

A couple of weeks ago I came across a comment about the class on Mastodon and figured I should take a look. It is offered on Moodle and I am always interested to see where other learning platforms are in capacity and look. Also, it is a six-week class, so longer than the OER course the DLI  offered here, “A Walk in the Open” which was just five days. And it is a course created by Open Courses out of Ireland. Here is a bit of who they are and what they do.

I only logged into the course this morning and discovered that Robin DeRosa was one of the reviewers of the course and that this is the first time it is being offered. Interestingly, I can’t just get you a link to the course… So it is open, but not open. I think.

The course content is stuff I am familiar with, but I am looking forward to hearing more ideas and to explore some new stuff. And Irish accents. Here are the learning outcomes:

  • Describe Open Educational Resources and Open Educational Practices and explain their relevance to quality, equity, and sustainability in Irish tertiary education;
  • Evaluate appropriate OER and OEP approaches for teaching, learning, and assessment, considering quality, accessibility, equity, and legal and ethical dimensions;
  • Identify practical and ethical considerations associated with using OER and OEP in the context of established and emerging technologies, including generative AI;
  • Integrate OER and OEP appropriately into teaching, learning, and assessment within your own context and in alignment with institutional, national, and international priorities;
  • Contribute to a culture of critical openness by developing, sharing, and sustaining open practices and contributing to relevant policy development.

The weekly schedule looks like so:

Week 1: This course introduces the principles and practices of open education and explores how they can be applied in teaching and learning. Open education aims to remove barriers to learning and promote greater access, equity, and effectiveness through the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP). It also examines the growing importance of open education within higher education in Ireland and internationally.

Week 2: Finding, using and evaluating OER

Week 3: Remixing and creating OER

Week 4: Sharing OER

Week 5: Using OEP

Week 6: Final steps & Future practice

Here is the video introduction to the class.

After my experience earlier this year in a course around Networked Learning, I am hoping to find some lasting connections in the field.
